Top School in Faridabad

Some of the top primary schools in Neharpar Faridabad have realised that there is a strong connection between executive functioning skills and the academic achievement of a student. During the pandemic times when online teaching has become the norm, the importance of a student’s executive functioning skills has now come to the fore as it allows a child to complete a task. The executive functioning skills include task initiation, working memory, prioritisation, and planning. Research in child psychology, as well as neuroplasty, has shown that when children are given focused practice and taught using these skills, the executive functions improve remarkably. Therefore, many Best schools in Faridabad focus on implementing new courses and techniques to cultivate these skills.

The working memory of a child allows him/her to hold on and use the information they get which allows them to think in multi-step directions as well as prioritizing the information they receive. When a student is online and has been involved in activities that include multiple languages, steps, a new schedule as well a lack of visual prompts, they need working memory more acutely. Therefore, to help a student improve his/her working memory, both in the classroom as well as when they are studying remotely, the teacher can work on the following areas.

4 different ways to improve a student’s working memory

Here are four simple ways through which you can boost the working memory of a child and help him/her improve their academic performance significantly.

Predictability

You must ensure that the routines you provide to your students are predictable. Contrary to the earlier theory that a student will find it boring, it has been researched that a predictable routine decreases the stress a child faces significantly and also frees up his/her working memory. Once the student is fully aware of a routine, then he/she can devote his their working memory to other information. For example, if a student can recognise the structure, then he/she can devote more time to the content.

Paper design

You should not leave multiple blank spaces on a worksheet which will confuse the student as they first have to find out an optimum way to organise the space as it does not has any visual aid regarding the task at hand. Therefore, you should give your students visual cues in the form of bullet points, boldfaced text, and lines so that it helps them in their thinking process. For example, if you want your students to answer in a word or two then use bullet points. On the other hand, if you expect them to give a detailed answer, then you should use lines in the worksheet. In this way, instead of using their working memory to find out the direction of what they have to do, they will use it to organise their thinking optimally.

Language

While giving some assignments to your students, you should plan your language carefully. Whatever direction you provide to your students should be specific, repetitive, brief, and should begin with a verb. A child with weak working memory can only process small information, if your directions begin with a verb, then it will allow them to remember and prioritize the information optimally.

These are just some of the ways through which you can improve the working memory of a child.
